Semper Tecum Sum

My contribution for the @hetalia-fanzine​ for the 11th anniversary! At the time, this was probably the most complicated thing I’d made ( still is to a large degree), combining two of my favourite things : art nouveau and this series about anthropomorphised countries. 


Details :
Semper tecum sum is Latin for “always with you” but with a travelling connotation. I see the countries as companions, having travelled together through the highs and lows of history through to modern times. Despite hardship, they remain united alongside their countrymen, and will continue journeying together on the winding path of life.

Floriography :


  • Lilies for peace
  • Rosemary & poppies for remembrance
  • Striped zinnias to commemorate absent friends
  • Laurel on the couch ( sneaky visual pun)
  • Oak leaves for strength.
  • Lapels contain their (supposed) national flowers : maple leaf, peony ( although plum blossoms are also their national flower) , iris, cornflower, camomile, lily, roses .

Fun stuff : Skeletonised Lady Liberty and some angels wielding dangerous weapons.

Can you imagine being that bird? You see a big falling dot off in the distance, so you go to investigate. And it’s a human. Just, like, hanging out, in the middle of the sky. Plumbing toward earth at terminal velocity.

“Huh, that’s weird” you think to yourself.

You land on them. They seem nonplussed by their predicament.

But you’re a busy bird, you’ve got places to be. So you just fly off. Good luck, crazy human. Hope you make it.
